      Although 25 years have passed from this day…33 years from when I met the man of my dreams…it still seems like just yesterday. I would not trade this life for anything else. The “teddy bear” is an important part of our journey gifted as a reminder when we left for college. It has been through many adventures, most with joy- some with sadness. However, time has shown its wear. It is only fitting to recreate the memory for our 25th anniversary by gifting my husband the teddy bear I created in wood as a reminder of our life together. I added some elements to tie it into the Valentine’s Day Theme. Below is the story of the day he proposed -the true beginning of a wonderful life together……. with teddy at our side.

The heat of the day still clung to my skin as we walked along the waterfront, the sun low and bright shimmering the horizon orange and pink. My dress sticking lightly to the back of my knees, with the smell of salt, and sunscreen in the air. I could hear the children laughing behind us as the water answered with a soft, rhythmic slap against the sand.
“Slow down,” I laughed, squeezing his hand. “It’s too beautiful to rush as I picked up another shell.”
He smiled in that way that always made my heart melt. The sun was setting directly in front of us, turning the water into rippling fire.
We stopped near the edge of the rocks; the breeze finally reached us. He let go of my hand and smirked in the way I knew he was up to something. For a split second, disappointment flickered—then confusion—then something else entirely.
“Hey,” I said softly. “What’s wrong?”
He didn’t answer. Instead, he reached behind and pulled out a small, slightly worn teddy bear, it's fur a familiar shade of honey brown. My breath stopped. That bear had been a joke between us since our first year together, a symbol of when I left for college.
“You brought him?” I whispered.
“Always, with us for the greatest moments” he said, voice unsteady. Then he set the bear carefully on the ground and dropped to one knee.
The world narrowed to the sound of my own heartbeat pounding in my chest and the rushing of blood in my ears. The sunset framed him perfectly, the sky pink and glowing behind his shoulders. The ring sparkled in the fading sunlight.
He said, “I can’t imagine my life without you, and I don’t want to. Will you marry me?”
My eyes filled with tears...in my mind, I saw our future unfold dreaming about the possibilities—tiny shoes by the door, bedtime stories with teddy read in different voices, small hands gripping our fingers as we walked this same waterfront years from now. I saw scraped knees, birthday candles, laughter echoing through a home we hadn’t found yet but somehow already shared.
“Yes,” I breathed, then louder, laughing and crying at once. “Yes, of course I will marry you.”
He stood, hands shaking as he slid the ring onto my finger. It was warm from his touch. The teddy bear looked on like a silent witness, ridiculous and perfect.
He pulled me into his arms, and I rested my forehead against his chest. The sun dipped below the horizon, and the sky darkened slowly. The teddy bear sat at our feet, silly and perfect. As he held me close, I knew—this was the beginning of everything we had dreamed of, and everything still to come.

That battered teddy is their for all life's best moments and will now sit on the hutch in my living room....waiting for many new adventures as we grow old together!
