Instruction

Step1

Prepare the Cutting Board

Clean the Surface: Wipe the board down with a lint-free cloth to remove dust.
No Masking Tape: Do not apply masking tape for photo engravings. You cannot peel the tape out of the millions of tiny dots a photo creates. You will engrave directly onto the bare wood.
- Pro Tip: If you are worried about smoke stains, you can wipe the board damp after engraving, but for the S1 with Air Assist, you should get a clean result without it.

Step2

Import & Process in xTool Creative Space (XCS)

Import Image: Drag your photo into XCS. DO NOT forget this step, otherwise someone else's photo will be in your cutting board :)
Resize: Scale the image to the size you want (e.g., 4x6 inches) in the bottom corner of your workspace.
Image Settings (The Most Important Part):
- Click on the image. On the right panel, look for the "Image Mode" or "Bitmap Mode" setting.
- Select "Jarvis" (Recommended): This "dithering" mode is best for photos on wood. It turns the grey pixels into a pattern of dots that looks like shading.
- Avoid "Grayscale" for wood, as it often results in a muddy, dark burn that lacks detail.
Adjust Sharpness/Contrast:
- In the image edit panel, increase Sharpness slightly (around +20).
- Increase Contrast slightly (+10). This helps the laser define the edges of the faces against the wood grain.
- Invert: Ensure the image is NOT inverted (unless you are engraving on black slate). For wood, you want the dark parts of the photo to be burned dark.

Step3

Recommended Settings (S1 40W)

The S1 40W is very powerful, so you need to move fast to avoid burning a hole through the photo.

Material: User-defined
Processing Type: Engrave
Bitmap Mode: Jarvis
Power: 25% - 35% (Start lower; you can always run it again, but you can't un-burn it).
Speed: 300 - 400 mm/s (Fast speed keeps the detail sharp).
Lines Per Cm (LPC): 100 - 120 (This gives high resolution without the dots bleeding into each other).
Pass: 1

Step4

Machine Setup

Focus: Use the S1's Pinpoint Positioning or Auto-Focus. Place the probe on the cutting board to get the exact distance.
- Note: If your cutting board is very thick (over 1.5 inches), ensure you have removed the riser base or lowered the floor if you have the riser base, so the laser head doesn't hit the wood.
Air Assist: Turn Air Assist to LOW (or connect the pump but keep flow low).
- Why? High air assist can sometimes blow smoke back onto the surface, staining the light parts of the photo. Low air keeps the lens clean but doesn't turbulently blow smoke into the grain.

Step5

Engrave & Clean

Frame the design to ensure it's exactly in the bottom right corner.
Hit Start.
Post-Process: After engraving, the wood might have some soot (black dust).
- Gently scrub the engraved area with a soft toothbrush and a little water (or vinegar/water mix).
- Wipe dry immediately.
- Re-seal the area with a little mineral oil or butcher block conditioner to protect the exposed wood.
