First Day Friend backpack Necklace

The First Day Friend Necklace was created to make introductions easier and more enjoyable during the first days of school.

Each necklace is shaped like a colorful school backpack and can be personalized with the child’s name, age, and a favorite activity or interest.

Lightweight, cheerful, and easy to produce, these wearable introduction necklaces can help children feel more confident when meeting new classmates and teachers.

Project Story

The inspiration for this project came from remembering the first day of school, when every student had to introduce themselves by saying their name, age, and something about themselves.

For young children, this moment can be exciting, but it can also feel uncomfortable or intimidating.

I wanted to transform that simple classroom introduction into something playful and visual.

The result is a backpack-shaped necklace that allows children to introduce themselves without needing to remember everything they want to say.

Each necklace can display information such as:

The child’s name
Their age
A favorite animal
A favorite activity
A hobby or interest

The demonstration versions were created as colorful girl and boy editions, but the files can be customized with any color combination, name, age, language, or school theme.

The goal is not only to create a decorative accessory, but also a simple conversation starter that can help children connect, communicate, and make new friends.

Assembly Instructions

Step 1 — Prepare the Design

Open the project file and customize:

Language, if needed

Confirm that all engraved text fits correctly inside the designated areas.

Step 2 — Cut and Engrave

Place the 3 mm plywood securely inside the laser machine.

Engrave the text and decorative details first.

After engraving is complete, cut:

Main backpack base
Front backpack panel
Name plate
Pocket section
Decorative elements
Necklace opening or connection point

Use laser settings appropriate for your specific machine and material.

Always perform a material test before running the complete project.

Step 3 — Clean the Pieces

Remove the pieces carefully from the machine.

Clean any smoke residue with a suitable cloth or cleaning method.

Lightly sand the edges if necessary.

Check that all corners and contact areas are smooth.

Step 4 — Paint

Paint the separate pieces before final assembly.

For the demonstration versions, I used:

Other color combinations can be used depending on the child’s preferences or school colors.

Allow all painted pieces to dry completely.

Step 5 — Assemble the Layers

Position the raised elements over the main backpack base.

Recommended assembly order:

Main backpack base
Front backpack layer
Upper name panel
Lower pocket or age panel
Small decorative elements

Apply only a small amount of glue to prevent excess adhesive from spreading beyond the edges.

Align all parts carefully and allow the glue to cure fully.

Step 6 — Add the Necklace Cord

Pass the necklace cord through the upper opening of the backpack.

For children, use a breakaway safety clasp designed to release if the cord is pulled strongly.

Adjust the cord to a comfortable length without making it excessively long.

Step 7 — Final Inspection

Before use, confirm that:

All pieces are securely attached
There are no sharp or rough edges
The paint is completely dry
The necklace cord is properly secured
The breakaway clasp releases correctly
The text is easy to read

Although the demonstration versions were produced using the xTool F1 10W and 3 mm plywood, the design is flexible.
