Information

I am submitting my original game, "Mole Patrol" for the 1PercentMakerChallenege, as it is probably my deepest and most thoroughly tested, played and revised complex design, since I bought my S1 last fall, and started leaning to design this win past winter. There were four complete revisions to this game, tweeking garden hole placement, cam lobe angles/design, improving on the Mr.Clickety wheel indexers, remaking the dice to balance the gameplay, making an accessory rack FOR the entire game to keep it organized, then finally sliding storage components for the garden weed tops inside the game body for storage and transport. Desiging, building, testing, and redesigning makes this FAR and ABOVE my most deserving entry to the one percent maker challenge, and this was five weeks of non stop one percent improvements and tweeks until I landed on a very fun, fuctional game which I a pround to say "i created".

Mole Patrol: The Clockwork Carrot Caper is a fully mechanical, laser-crafted tabletop game that blends playful storytelling with thoughtful engineering and interactive design.
At its core, the game is driven by a modular cam and dial system that brings the underground world to life. Each Mole Control Wheel features a tactile, replaceable click mechanism, designed for both satisfying gameplay and long-term durability. The wheels provide visual feedback through integrated windows, revealing stages of mole activity from quiet digging to full carrot raids.
The internal cam shafts are built with quick-release connections, allowing for easy maintenance and future variation in gameplay. This modular approach means the mechanics are not only reliable, but adaptable, inviting continued evolution of the system beyond a single build.
Gameplay itself balances chance and strategy through dual dice systems, creating a dynamic interaction between planting, harvesting, and the ever-present threat of moles. Every action physically engages the mechanism, reinforcing the connection between player decisions and the machine’s response.
The experience is elevated through a cohesive 1930s-inspired visual style, where each illustrated element contributes to the personality of the game. From expressive carrot characters to the themed “Bunny’s Banker” storage system, the design aims to create a world that feels both nostalgic and alive.
Finally, the project is designed with usability in mind. Components are accessible, repairable, and intuitive, with features like removable parts, clear visual indicators, and a companion video guide to support new players.
This piece is intended not just as a game, but as a demonstration of how mechanical design, storytelling, and craftsmanship can come together to create something engaging, durable, and fun to explore.

using a “playfield support” dowel for alignments glue two CamBed parts to the Mr. Spinny Wheel 3000x, and a second Mr. Spinny Wheel 3000 to the backside.

Take special care to make sure glue flow holes are in alignment. After glue starts to set slightly, move the assembly along the dowel and then remove and clamp.

Layout box panels exactly as shown then flip the outer panels. Glue together rear panel and then clamp. Allow to set while applying glue to tabs of other panels. I use the unused at this point, front panel, to keep the box square while the glue sets.

Slide the rear CamBed assembly thru the rear panel and glue a MoleControl Retainer wheel on the the backside to secure. Occasionally give a gentle spin as it sets to make sure it’s free.

Glue two Mr. Spinny Wheel 1000 to the inside of each Mole Control Dial bushing core. Again give a spin while it sets to be sure it is free. Also you can slide the Mr. Spinny Wheel 3000 assembly thru the CamBed bushing inside the front panel.

Sand each CamCore shaft until it sets into each assembly so that it isn’t too tight causing friction lengthwise but also not too lose. Now is a good time to try out the CamLock system as well.

Step10: Assemble Playfield

Preview

Glue a round carrot guide under each hole of the playfield, making sure each is centered for smooth carrot movement. Once set, glue a second half guide on top of each of those as shown. These half guides should always be opposite the cam to avoid obstructing. Once glue has set, sand the edges down a bit and inside each hole to allow smooth movement.

Once glue has set, I tape the playfield to the cabinet, then glue the Playfield Supports in place on the underside.

Step11: Build the Camshaft!

I put masking tape on playfield top to indicate where the camshaft will set. Now align cam lobes if you choice along the shaft so that they are under each hole. This is where you can make the game your own.

Once you have a cam setup you wish to try, slide it onto the Modular Cam system, slide the CamLock in place and then slide a CamSpacer. Put the playfield on, pop some carrots into the holes and see how it plays!

Here is the cam lobe order I cam currently using.
