This project combines functionality and fun: a laser-cut bamboo cutting board that also works as a Battleship game board. I created this board to turn a simple breakfast or snack moment into a playful experience. Using colorful Smarties as game pieces makes the game interactive, reusable, and perfect for couples, families, or friends. The board has to be laser-engraved twice so that two players can compete against each other.
Instruction
Step1: Adjust the Design Size
First, adjust the size of the Battleship game layout to match your cutting board. Choose the dimensions depending on how large you want the playing area to be on the board.
Step2: Place the Cutting Board in the Laser Cutter
Place your cutting board securely in the laser cutter. I used a bamboo cutting board, but other laser-safe wooden boards work as well. Make sure it’s aligned straight.
Step3: Set and Check the Laser Parameters
Adjust the laser settings (power, speed, passes) according to your material. Double-check the settings to ensure a clean engraving without burning too much.
Step4: Activate Automatic Height Measurement
Turn on the automatic material measurement in the software. This measures the distance and height of the board to ensure accurate focus.
Step5: Frame the Design
Set the frame around the design in the software and let the laser trace the frame on the board. This ensures the layout fits perfectly.
Step6: Start the Laser Engraving
Start the laser engraving process. Repeat for a second board so two players can play against each other.
Step7: Lightly Sand the Board
After laser engraving, lightly sand the board with fine sandpaper to remove smoke marks and residues from the laser process.
Step8: Clean the Board
Gently wash the board with water to remove any remaining dust or particles. Now it’s ready for use!
Step9: How to Play
Use Smarties as game pieces. You can either:
use two colors with many Smarties, or
use four different colors for clearer gameplay.
Enjoy playing Battleship while sharing snacks at the same time.
