Easter Chess Set

Information
This guide explains how to create a cute Easter-themed chess set using a laser cutter. The chess pieces are designed in a playful Easter style and can be inserted into the board, making the set both decorative and functional. It is perfect as a handmade gift or for playing together during Easter.
The hierarchy of the pieces follows the classic chess order, from most important to least important:
• King → Easter bunny with a crown
• Queen → Bunny with a bow
• Rook → Easter basket
• Bishop → Rooster
• Knight → Jumping bunny
• Pawn → Easter egg

Instruction
Step1: Open the File

First, open the provided file that contains multiple worksheets with all necessary elements for the chess set. On the first worksheet, you will find all 16 pieces per side, including pawns, rooks, knights, bishops, a queen, and a king, all designed in the Easter theme.
Step2: Prepare the MDF Boards

Next, prepare two MDF boards. A suitable starting size is 28 × 48 cm, although smaller sizes can also work as long as the design fits properly. Paint one board in one color and the second board in another color. It is important to paint both sides of each board so that the engraved chess pieces will be visible from both sides later on.
Step3: Let the Paint Dry
After painting, allow both boards to dry completely before continuing. This step is important to ensure clean engraving and cutting results.
Step4: Adjust File Settings
Before using the laser cutter, adjust the material settings in the software. In this example, 3 mm MDF was used. If you use a different material thickness, you will need to adapt the file so that the slots and pieces fit correctly.
Step5: Place and Fix the First Board

Place the first board into the laser cutter and secure it using pin holders or clamps, as painted MDF can bend slightly. Make sure the surface is as flat as possible.
Step6: Measure and Align
Define the working area in the laser cutter software and check the focus or distance settings to ensure precise alignment.
Step7: Engrave Both Boards

Use the exact same file for both MDF boards. First engrave and cut the design on one board, then repeat the same process with the second board so that you get two identical sets in different colors.
Step8: Engraving and Cutting (First Worksheet)

For each board, begin with engraving and then proceed with cutting. Keep the settings consistent for both boards.
Step9: Process the Second Worksheet

After finishing the first worksheet, open the second worksheet and place MDF into the laser cutter. Cut this file to create the first half of the lower base plate.
Step10: Process the Third Worksheet

Then open the third worksheet and cut the remaining half of the base plate as well as the frame elements.
Step11: Assemble the Base and Board

First, glue the two base plate halves together so they form one stable surface. Once the base is assembled, start gluing the chessboard squares onto it. Attach the squares one by one in alternating colors, following the correct pattern.
Step12: Attach the Frame

After all squares are glued onto the board, attach the frame around the edges. There are two shorter sides (32 cm) and two longer sides.
Start by gluing the two opposite shorter sides first. After that, glue the two longer sides to complete the frame. This creates a clean finish and stabilizes the board.
Step13: Final Assembly and Playing

Once everything is assembled, take the chess pieces that have been engraved on both sides and insert them into the board. Because they are visible from both sides, they are perfect for playing.
Your Easter-themed chess set is now finished and ready to use or to give as a special handmade gift 🎁🐰
