Step1

Preparation & Safety

  1. Check Your Material:
    • Cast vs. Extruded: For engraving, Cast Acrylic is superior. It turns a beautiful frosty white when engraved. Extruded acrylic tends to melt and stays clear, giving a less distinct result.
    • Masking: Most acrylic comes with a paper or plastic protective masking. Leave the paper masking ON the side you are engraving. This prevents smoke residue (vapors) from staining the surface of the acrylic around your design.
  2. Ventilation: Acrylic fumes are strong and unpleasant. Ensure your purifier is running or your exhaust pipe is vented outside.

xTool Studio Setup

  1. Import Design: Open XCS and import the design.
  2. Resize: Click on the design and use the size constraints on the top bar to match the dimensions of your acrylic sheet (or your desired size, e.g., 4:5 ratio).
  3. Parameter Settings (Power & Speed):
    • This varies heavily by your machine (D1 Pro, M1, F1, or P2).
    • The Golden Rule: Use the Material Test Array feature in XCS.
      • Go to the "Array" menu -> "Material Test Array."
      • This generates a grid of squares with different speeds and powers. Run this on a scrap piece of your red acrylic to find the perfect contrast without melting the material too deep.

Step3

Machine Setup

  1. Placement: Place your red acrylic sheet on the honeycomb bed or slats. Use magnets or pins to keep it perfectly flat.
  2. Focusing:
    • Manual Focus (D1/M1/S1): Lower the laser module and use the kickstand lever to set the distance to the top surface of the acrylic.
    • Auto-Focus (P2/F1): Click the auto-measure button in the software.
  3. Framing: Click Framing in XCS. The laser head will trace the outline of your job. Ensure your design fits on the plastic and isn't hitting any magnets.

Execution

  1. Air Assist:
    • For Engraving: Turn the air assist LOW or OFF. High air pressure can blow the vaporized acrylic back onto the hot surface, causing a "cloudy" or rough finish. Low air keeps the lens clean without cooling the plastic too aggressively.
  2. Start: Close the lid (if applicable), put on your green safety goggles (if using an open diode laser), and hit Process/Start.

Post-Processing (The Reveal)

  1. Peeling: Once finished, you will see the engraving through the paper mask. Use a piece of duct tape or a plastic razor blade to lift the edge of the masking and peel it off. This is the most satisfying part!
  2. Cleaning:
    • If there is residue, clean it gently.
    • WARNING: Do NOT use Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) on laser-cut acrylic. It can cause "crazing" (micro-cracks) due to thermal stress. Use dish soap and water or a specialized plastic cleaner like Novus 1.
