Phase 1: The Spark & Innovation (Idea)
The inspiration came from wanting to create a memorable, interactive Back-to-School photo prop for classrooms. However, standard photo frames are usually a "one-and-done" project. To elevate the utility, I engineered a swappable system using hidden magnets behind the nameplates. This allows parents and teachers to dynamically change the names for different classrooms or students year after year, transforming a simple sign into a highly reusable school asset.
Phase 2: Digital Design & File Prep
Using a generic school bus layout as my visual foundation, I custom-drafted and modified the paths to scale it perfectly as a functional photo booth frame. I integrated the playful "Playkidz" font to give the lettering a bold, kid-friendly 3D pop. I carefully planned the layered cut lines to create recessed pockets where the names and magnets would seamlessly align.
  • Smart Alignment Marks: I added small "x" marks directly into the design file where the lights and bus details belong. Scoring these lightly with the laser gave me a perfect, highly precise visual guide for hand-gluing later.
Phase 3: Laser Processing
The digital file was sent to my xTool laser machine. The machine handled the precision processing flawlessly, cleanly cutting the distinct wood layers, base frame, wheels, and fine lettering.
Phase 4: Manual Artistry & Finishing (Assembly)
Once the pieces were cut, the hands-on crafting began:
  • Painting: I meticulously hand-painted the multi-layered wood pieces using vibrant, high-contrast colors to replicate a classic yellow school bus.
  • Glue & Magnet Integration: I glued the structural bus frame layers together and carefully set the small magnets into their designated zones on both the frame and the individual nameplates.
  • Curing: The final assembled piece was left to fully cure and dry for approximately 90 minutes, ensuring maximum bond strength for the heavy handling a photo booth receives.
