What makes a mandala elephant work?

Accepted Answer

Balance between the silhouette and the fill. Keep the outer edge simple and unmistakable, then let the pattern density rise toward the centre of the body. If the cut pattern reaches the outline, the animal stops reading as an animal at a distance. Leaving a clear band of two to three millimetres inside the edge fixes it.

How thin can the cut pattern be?

Accepted Answer

On three millimetre plywood, keep bridges between cut openings at least 1.5 mm wide, and 2 mm if the piece will be handled rather than hung. Thinner than that and the bridges snap during weeding or the first time someone picks the piece up. Scale the whole design rather than thinning bridges to fit more detail.

Are safari animals suitable for a nursery?

Accepted Answer

They are one of the most requested nursery themes, usually as a name sign, a night light, or a set of wall shapes. Keep the finish non-toxic and sand every edge, since anything at cot height gets touched. Avoid small separate pieces that can come loose, and mount wall art with proper fixings rather than adhesive strips.

How do you get a relief effect on a lion?

Accepted Answer

Emboss rather than cut. A greyscale depth map drives variable engraving depth so the mane rises above the face, which is what gives the piece its presence. This needs a machine that supports depth control and a slow multi-pass job. Hardwood holds the fine ridges far better than plywood, which tears at the veneer line.

What size suits a layered animal wall piece?

Accepted Answer

Between 250 and 400 mm across the widest point works for a single feature piece on a wall. Below 200 mm the layered detail stops reading from normal viewing distance and the effort is wasted. Above 400 mm, plywood at three millimetre starts to bow and needs a stiffening batten on the back.
