How does colour engraving on steel actually work?

The laser heats the surface enough to grow a thin oxide layer, and the thickness of that layer decides which wavelength it reflects. No ink or coating is involved: the colour is interference from the oxide itself. Change the pulse settings and the layer thickness changes, which is why one file produces different colours.
