Information

This handcrafted retro buffalo display is a bold nod to classic football heritage, inspired by the iconic early-era logo of the Buffalo Bills. The buffalo is cut from a solid ¼″ piece of cocobolo, showcasing the wood’s deep, natural color and striking grain, and slots cleanly into a matching solid base to stand proudly on its own. The word BILLS is inlaid on the front using precision-cut brass, adding a warm metallic contrast that elevates the piece from simple decor to statement craftsmanship. The project was produced using two laser systems—an F2 Ultra for cutting the brass inlay and a P2s for cutting and pocketing the wood—demonstrating a seamless blend of traditional materials and modern fabrication. For makers without the ability to cut metal, the brass inlay can easily be substituted with wood, offering flexibility without compromising the overall design. Perfect for desks, shelves, or display cases, this piece combines retro sports nostalgia with premium materials and clean, modern execution.

Select Your Materials

  • Choose your wood for the main buffalo and base. If you plan to use a wood inlay, select a species with strong contrast to the main body. Otherwise, prepare brass stock for the inlay letters.

Cut the Inlay Letters

  • If using brass, set up your xTool F2 Ultra to cut the BILLS lettering. After cutting, allow the letters to cool and remove them carefully—they will be hot immediately after cutting.

Engrave and Cut the Wood

  • Load your wood into the xTool P2s. First, engrave the pocket for the inlay letters, ensuring a clean, snug fit. Next, cut the outline of the buffalo and the matching base.

Install the Inlay

  • Once all cutting is complete, glue the inlay letters into their engraved pockets. Use a clamp to hold the letters firmly in place until the adhesive fully cures.

Final Sanding

  • After the glue has dried, lightly sand the entire piece using 400-grit sandpaper, followed by 800-grit, to clean up the wood and polish the inlay for a smooth finish.

Assembly & Finish

  • Slot the buffalo into the base, apply your desired finish, and allow it to cure fully. Once finished, your display is ready to stand proud.

Simple build. Big presence. 🦬
