Information

      I was asked to make a cross for VE day and VJ day by a good friend who will be laying it at a remembrance ceremony at Chungkai allied war cemetery, Thailand, in honour of the POW's who lost their lives in WW2.

I thought this was a great honour and a privilege to be asked.  

I hope they like it.

I do apologise there aren't any files or anything, it was very much just designed and made as I thought about it! I took pics of the process but it was very much a think on the move design, I've included a few of the design.

Step1

I apologise for not saving the files ! my mistake and I regret it now.

I marked the cross out from a jpeg image on a large chopping board, used the jigsaw to get a rough shape, then measured and marked a straight reference edge with a square.

I used a bandsaw, with the straight edge to get clean straight lines, using each new cut to get my next parallel edge.

I then used a router to curve the base block off and used a pillar drill and jigsaw to make the square slot for the cross.

I also curved off the face edges of the cross with a router. Afterwards sanding the faces and edges to a smooth finish.

I sprayed the base and the cross with primer, then allowed plenty of drying time before I put 2 layers tape over the painted surface and lasered the writing on, leaving the tape on I sprayed the letters over several times, allowing the letters to fully dry each time.

I also cut 3 rectangles with the same interior but offset externally to 7.5, 5 and 3 mm respectively to form a cool feature, to hide the bottom of the cross entering the base, painting these red white and blue. I also realised the dove was better engraved and sprayed gold, not stuck on, so that's what I did.
