Wooden Star Breathing and Mindfulness Tracing Tool for Children

      This project was inspired by my own journey into laser crafting with my son, who is autistic. One of the biggest things I've learned is that sometimes a child doesn't need lots of words or instructions—they just need something simple to help them slow down and reset.

The Breathe & Trace Star is designed as a calming classroom companion. Children place their finger on the start of the engraved path and slowly trace around the star. As they move up each point they breathe in, and as they move down they breathe out, creating a simple, easy-to-follow breathing exercise that helps encourage calm, focus and self-regulation.

Made from a single piece of 3mm plywood, it's inexpensive to produce, durable enough for classrooms, and small enough to fit into a desk tray, school bag or calm corner. The engraved design means there are no loose parts, making it ideal for younger children as well as those who benefit from tactile learning.

This is more than just a wooden star—it's a tool that can help children pause, regulate their emotions and return to learning when they feel overwhelmed. While it was designed with autistic and ADHD children in mind, it's something that any child can benefit from during a busy school day.

Creating products that genuinely help children is why I started laser crafting, and I hope this small project shows how thoughtful design can make a real difference in the classroom.
