Information

Celebrate the dads who show up every day with this Dad Bod-themed Father's Day project. More than just a look, a dad bod is a badge of honor—a reminder of hard work, sacrifices, and years spent putting family first.

This project features one design applied to three personalized gifts: a wooden plaque, a leather keychain, and a wooden keychain. It showcases how xTool AI Make can transform a simple idea into a fun, personalized, and meaningful gift.

The included .xcs files contain all the engraving and cutting designs, along with the settings used to create each project. Feel free to customize the text, resize the designs, or modify the shapes to suit your materials and personal preferences.

You'll also find step-by-step instructions showing how each piece was created. This beginner-friendly project is perfect for anyone looking to create custom gifts in xTool Studio without prior design experience.

Step1: Wooden Plaque Engrave and Cut

Dad Bod Champ Father's Day Wooden Plaque and Keychain instruction: step 1 - Wooden Plaque Engrave and Cut
Preview

Since I do not own an xTool Slide Extension, I created this project in multiple steps. First, I engraved and cut the main plaque design. After completing the initial engraving, I created an offset version of the design and cut it separately. The offset layer was then attached to the plaque to add depth and dimension to the finished piece.

To process each layer, simply drag the completed design aside in the workspace and run the offset cut separately. You may customize the text before processing the next layer. Repeat the same process for the base stand.

The design dimensions were created to fit a 100×100mm wood blank. If you have a larger piece of wood available, feel free to resize the design to maximize your working area.

This method allows you to create a layered 3D effect while working within the machine's standard working area.

Using the main design, resize it to 2" wide and create an offset using the Outer Shapes Only option.

*FOR CUTTING LEATHER*

Create a copy of the offset shape, then flip it vertically. Add a rectangle and align all elements to the center. Once aligned, select all elements and apply Union to create the final keychain shape.

To cut the leather piece, you may use either your laser machine or a cutter plotter. If using a cutter plotter, select the final shape, right-click, and choose Export as SVG.

I cut my leather using a cutter plotter to avoid the strong burnt odor that can result from laser-cutting leather.

*FOR ENGRAVING ON LEATHER*

Drag only the main design into the workspace. The engraving settings for leather are already included in the provided .xcs file.

Before engraving, run Auto Measure based on the thickness of your leather material and use the Framing function to confirm placement. Once everything is aligned correctly, proceed with engraving.

*LEATHER KEYCHAIN ASSEMBLY*

For a quick and simple assembly, insert the keyring and secure the leather using your preferred adhesive. Fabric glues such as E6000 work well, but feel free to use any adhesive that is suitable for leather.

For a more premium finish, you can reinforce the keychain with rivets, stitching, or a combination of both. This will improve durability while giving the finished piece a more professional appearance.

Step3: Wooden Keychain

Using the main design, resize it to 2" wide and create an offset using the Outer Shapes Only option.

Add either a circle or a rectangle shape, depending on the type of keyring you plan to use. Adjust and combine the shapes as desired to create your preferred keychain style. Once satisfied with the layout, merge the elements into a single cut shape.

The included .xcs file contains the engraving settings used for this project. Feel free to customize the text, resize the design, or modify the shape to suit your material and personal preferences.
