      This is an engraving I did on a slice of kiln dried wood, I got from cutting down one of the dead basswood trees out back. This big ol maine coon chonker is fighting every urge not to chow down on mom's cake!

You CAN use the circle function if you have a nice round piece of basswood, but most of mine are all natural and slightly off circular so I use the polygon function to get the perfect place.

Ive engraved a lot of these slices. The dryness will effect the engraving quality and settings for you. The drier the wood the better. Mine are cured in a kiln at 160f with a fan . I find that 62% power at 186mm/sec in jarvis mode works great for these.
