Information

This project started the old-fashioned way — with a pencil and paper.

Instead of using AI-generated artwork or stock graphics, I hand-drew the father-and-kitten illustration first. Once I was happy with the sketch, I scanned it into my computer and imported it into xTool Studio for engraving preparation.

The result is a personalized Father's Day keepsake that can be used as a coaster or transformed into an ornament by adding a hanging hole and jute twine.

Instruction

1

Step1: Create the Artwork

I sketched the design by hand on paper:

  • Large father cat
  • Small kitten standing proudly on top
  • Speech bubble saying "Happy Father's Day!"

The goal was to keep the artwork simple, playful, and engraving-friendly with clear outlines and minimal fine details.

2

Step2: Scan the Drawing

After completing the sketch:

  1. Scan the drawing at high resolution (300 DPI or higher).
  2. Save as PNG or JPG.
  3. Remove the background if necessary.
  4. Increase contrast so the black lines are clearly defined.
3

Step3: Import into xTool Studio

  • Open xTool Studio.
  • Import the scanned artwork.
  • Use Image Trace if needed.
  • Resize to fit the wood slice.
  • Position the artwork in the center.
  • Add any personalization if desired.
4

Step4: Prepare the Wood Slice

Place the wood slice inside the xTool F2.

For the ornament version:

  • Drill or laser-cut a small hole near the top edge.
  • Leave enough margin so the bark edge remains intact.
5

Step5: Engrave

Start engraving using the settings above

6

Step6: Clean Up

After engraving:

  1. Wipe away soot using a soft cloth.
  2. Lightly brush the bark edge.
  3. Apply mineral oil or wood conditioner if desired.

This helps bring out the grain while keeping the engraving dark and crisp.

7

Step7: Convert to Ornament

To turn the coaster into a hanging ornament:

  1. Add a small hole at the top.
  2. Thread natural jute twine through the hole.
  3. Tie a simple loop.

Now it can hang on:

  • Father's Day gift bags
  • Memory displays
  • Office desks
  • Workshop walls
  • Christmas trees as a family keepsake
