Snowflake Designs

A snowflake is six-fold symmetry, which means a single sixty-degree wedge drawn once and mirrored around a centre. That makes it a good exercise in pattern and a reliable seasonal seller. Ornaments at 60 to 100 mm dominate, hung from a tree or a garland. Larger versions become window pieces and wall panels, sometimes layered so two or three flakes overlap at different depths. The same shape appears on coasters, gift tags and box lids. Frosted and mirror acrylic read as ice, while birch keeps the piece warm rather than wintry. Sizes run from a 60 mm tree ornament to a 30 cm window star.

FAQs

Why do snowflakes have six points?

Ice crystals grow on a hexagonal molecular lattice, so natural flakes branch in multiples of six. Designs with five or eight points read as stars instead. If you want the shape to be recognisably a snowflake, build it from a single wedge repeated six times around the centre.
