Slate coasters get their look from the stone's natural charcoal-to-black surface, which reveals a bright white or light gray line the moment it's engraved, giving names, monograms, quotes, and line art strong contrast without any added paint or ink. The stone is naturally heat- and moisture-resistant, so it holds up well under mugs and glasses for years without fading or scratching through normal use. Because slate splits into flat, slightly textured tiles, most coasters keep a raw or lightly polished edge rather than a perfectly smooth finish, which adds to the handmade feel. A felt or cork backing is standard, protecting tabletops and keeping the coaster from sliding. Starting settings for the xTool M2, S1, F2 and F1, shared by makers who engraved slate, are listed in the first question below, and most designs here include an .xcs file you can open directly in xTool Studio.
