This is scrap leather that my wife uses to make medicine bags. She is not sure of the exact leather it is. But it is genuine leather from a store called Hobby Lobby. They sell bags of scrap leather for crafting needs. and no prep was done at all.

Wear goggles that match the wavelength of the light source

When operating with open covers or using open-type devices, be sure to wear laser goggles that match the wavelength of the light source. Different light sources (blue light/infrared/CO2/UV) have different wavelengths; please pay attention to whether the wavelength protected by the goggles matches the laser;

Processing chlorine-containing materials is prohibited

It is strictly forbidden to process chlorine-containing materials such as PVC, artificial leather, or veneer soft rubber. Laser burning releases highly corrosive toxic gases such as hydrogen chloride, endangering human health and corroding guide rails, lenses, and circuit boards. When unsure about the material, first conduct a small-area test and observe the smell.
