Ocean designs split neatly between two treatments. The first uses an animal as a silhouette filled with wave or shell patterns, which suits turtles and whales because both keep a readable shape when the interior is cut away. The second builds a scene in layers, with a reef or wave band in front and open water behind, so the creature appears to swim through the piece. Whales carry personalised names more often than any other sea motif, usually along the flank. Octopus and jellyfish need thicker limbs than they look like they need.
