This tutorial will show you how to take a repeatable pattern, expand it, crop it, invert it and make a coaster design with it.

  1. Let's take the Japanese wave pattern built in into Xtool Studio.
  2. Once imported into the canvas we need to use the array generator to repeat the pattern on the X and Y axis.
  3. For the upcoming step we will need to make the resulting output a compound vector
2

Step2: Make it round ! (if you use a round coaster)

Now this step is for those that want a round coaster out of this square pattern.

  1. Create a circle the size of your coaster
  2. Select both the circle and the compound vector created earlier
  3. Execute an Intersect boolean operation to crop the pattern into the round

Tadaaa ! you got one version of the coaser, nice going. What about if you want to invert the design, it's easy to hit the invert button on an image but how you do this on a vector ?

3

Step3: Invert the vector (optional)

Fortunately it's not difficult !

  1. Make a copy of the current round pattern as we want to keep that one
  2. Create a circle the same size as earlier
  3. Select “engrave” mode for that circle which will make in plain
  4. select the copied pattern and the filled circle
  5. center align them
  6. with both selected do a substract boolean operation

And now you have the same pattern inverted !
