Description

Build a hand-cranked kinetic sculpture: turn the crank and a row of slats rises and falls as a rolling ocean wave. Every cam is calculated so the wave is a true travelling sine. Watch your machine run in the animated 3D preview before you cut a single part.

Make it yours

  • 8–32 slats, ½ to 3 waves across, wave height 10–40 mm
  • Curl, round or flat wave crests
  • Your name engraved on the front panel, with engraved sea waves, in 7 fonts
  • Preview in wood or acrylic, for example basswood with ocean-blue acrylic slats
  • Show mechanismx-ray view: watch the helical camshaft drive every slat

Engineered to work

  • Square shaft laminated from two strips of your material, so no dowels need buying
  • Offset cams with spacers; flat slat feet ride the cams for a perfect sine motion
  • Slats slide in two slotted guide plates; tab-and-slot frame; crank with knob and a collar
  • Every cam and slat is engraved with its number, with each cam's number on its high side
  • Every configuration is simulated through a full turn: slats never jam or drop out, cams clear the frame
  • Kerf compensation, 1:1 mm files, auto-nested on 300×300, 400×300, 600×400 sheets or your xTool S1 / P2 / M1 bed

Assembly

  1. Frame: end plates into the base, guides and panels into the end plates, then glue.
  2. Glue the two shaft strips into a square rod and thread on collar, cam 1, spacer, cam 2…
  3. Drop the slats in by number, fit the crank, add a little wax, and turn.

Red lines cut, blue engraves. A step-by-step README comes with every download.
