What Is a Vinyl Transfer?
In both versions, the sequence is the same: a machine cuts your design into a thin vinyl sheet, you remove the vinyl you do not want, and the design that remains gets carried onto its final surface.
The word “transfer” refers to that last step. What differs is what carries it and what makes it stay.

The Two Types of Vinyl Transfer, and How to Tell Them Apart
Heat transfer vinyl, for fabric
Sold as HTV or iron-on. It has a heat-activated adhesive on the back and comes attached to a clear plastic carrier sheet. A heat press bonds it to a shirt, bag or hat.

Adhesive vinyl, for hard surfaces
Sold as permanent or removable adhesive vinyl. It is a sticker: the adhesive works at room temperature, and it goes onto mugs, tumblers, laptops, windows, walls and car glass.
Heat is not involved at any point. In fact, heat is what ruins it.
How to tell which one you are holding
Check the backing. HTV has a shiny, slightly stiff clear carrier on the front of the design. Adhesive vinyl has a paper liner on the back, like a giant sticker sheet.

How a Heat Transfer Vinyl Design Gets Onto Fabric

Step 1
Mirror the design. HTV is cut face down, so anything with text comes out backwards unless you flip it first.
Step 2
Cut with the shiny carrier side down, so the blade cuts the vinyl and not the carrier.
Step 3
Weed away everything that is not the design, including the middles of letters.
Step 4
Press at the temperature and time the vinyl specifies, then peel the carrier hot or cold as instructed.

Both kinds start from a roll, and the roll decides the finish. Standard, glitter, puff and printable heat transfer vinyl are stocked by the sheet for testing before you commit to a colour.
How an Adhesive Vinyl Transfer Works

Do not mirror
Adhesive vinyl is cut face up, so mirroring produces a backwards result — the opposite rule to HTV.
Cut, then weed
Same as HTV, but the design stays stuck to its paper liner rather than a clear carrier.
Burnish transfer tape over the top
Rub it down firmly. This is the step people rush, and it is why letters get left behind.
Peel the liner away at a sharp angle
The design should lift with the tape. If a letter stays behind, lay it back down and burnish again.
Apply, burnish, then remove the tape slowly at a shallow angle, pulling it back on itself rather than up.
Transfer tape is not optional for multi-piece designs
A single solid shape can be moved by hand. A word cannot: the moment the liner comes off, every letter is a separate loose sticker. The tape exists purely to hold spacing.
What You Need to Make a Vinyl Transfer
A cutting machine

Any blade cutter handles both vinyl types. Some lasers cut vinyl too, though fumes make it a poor fit for many machines.
A weeding tool
A hook or fine pick. Fingernails tear small pieces and stretch the design.
For fabric: a heat press

Vinyl Transfer Mistakes That Waste Material
Buying the wrong type
Adhesive vinyl on a shirt peels off in the first wash. HTV on a mug will not stick at all without heat.
Getting mirroring backwards
Mirror for HTV, do not mirror for adhesive. Reversed once, the material is gone.
Not burnishing enough
Both processes fail at the transfer step for the same reason: not enough pressure before peeling.
Peeling at the wrong angle
Pull tape and carriers back on themselves at a shallow angle, never straight up.
Ignoring the peel temperature
HTV specifies hot, warm or cold peel. Guessing lifts the design straight back off.
