24 HTV Finishes, from Plain PU to 3D Puff

PU for everyday work, glitter PET for sparkle, 3D puff that rises when pressed, chameleon and sun-colour-changing films, glow in the dark, and metallic foil.

The finish is the product here. A design in plain PU and the same design in puff read as completely different pieces, and the press settings differ with it.

Cut, Weed, Press — No Ink and No Pretreatment

HTV is the shortest route from design to garment. There is no ink to manage, no powder to shake, no pretreatment to spray, and no printer to maintain.

The trade-off is complexity: every colour is a separate layer of vinyl, so a photograph is impractical while bold text and shapes are ideal. That is the line where DTF takes over.

Pick Your Finish

The finish changes both how the piece reads and how you press it.

PU — the everyday one

Thin, matte and flexible. The default for text and simple shapes, and the cheapest way to learn weeding.

Glitter PET

Coarse sparkle that hides weeding imperfections. Thicker than PU, so it needs a firmer press and a longer dwell.

3D puff

Rises when pressed, giving a raised, foam-like letter. Bold shapes only — fine detail collapses as it expands.

Colour-changing and glow

Chameleon shifts with viewing angle, sun-colour films change outdoors, and glow charges under light. Novelty that sells.

HTV or DTF? Artwork Complexity Decides

Both press onto fabric. The dividing line is how many colours the design has.

One or two colours — HTV

Bold text, logos, numbers. One vinyl layer per colour, cut and weeded. Cheapest per piece at low volume.

Photographic or many colours — DTF

A full-colour print on film with adhesive powder. No weeding, no layer limit, and it works on any fibre content.

Raised or special effect — HTV

Puff, glitter, foil and glow have no DTF equivalent. If the effect is the point, HTV is the only route.

Mixed fibre garments — either

HTV and DTF both bond to cotton, polyester and blends. Sublimation is the one that needs polyester.

Why Start From a Tested Setting

Weeding is the real work

Cutting takes seconds; removing the vinyl you do not want takes the time. Simple shapes with few enclosed counters weed fastest.

Press pressure matters more than temperature

Most failed HTV is under-pressed rather than under-heated. Thicker films — glitter and puff — need noticeably firmer pressure.

Peel type is printed on the roll

Hot peel, warm peel and cold peel are not interchangeable. Peeling a cold-peel film hot lifts the design straight off the shirt.

Layer order changes the result

When stacking colours, press each layer briefly and the final layer fully. Over-pressing lower layers distorts them.
