      For the Paws & Portraits: Pet Gifts Contest 2026 I created the Celestial Orange Cat, a highly detailed, colour-engraved stainless-steel pet portrait keychain.

This design was inspired by the mysterious and intuitive nature of cats. I have always felt that cats are somehow connected to the spirit realm, quietly watching, sensing and understanding far more than we realize. The orange-and-white tabby is surrounded by a celestial rainbow, moon, stars and colourful flowers against a deep black background.

This is not a beginner project, but it could be if you're patient. Its intricate linework and individually engraved colour sections require patience, and the complete engraving takes approximately **1 hour and 20 minutes**. The finished piece is a vibrant celestial keepsake celebrating the beauty, personality and quiet magic of cats.

The xTool F2 Portable may be small, but its 5W infrared laser is surprisingly powerful—especially when it comes to colour engraving on stainless steel.

So…It's important to make a material sacrifice to get good colors!

For this project, I used Yves.Lafont’s colour palette to choose the colours I wanted to create. I engraved the design onto xTool's 1.3mm stainless-steel military dog tag. I think it would also look amazing on 1 mm metal business cards, although I wouldn’t go much thinner because the heat needed for colour engraving could cause the metal to warp.

Now engrave the front and back with one of your spare dog tags - it will be worth it and a good reference for the future!

I like to

right click “ungroup it”

turn off all outputs then remove the text because I am familiar with the pallet. Keep the text if you want to.

Turn on infared pre-heat

Take you xTool Military Dog Tag 50mm x 28mm and

Engrave the first block, then the second block on the other side of the tag- you will need to manipulate it to fit on your tag. See picture.

Step 1 - Layers open
Step 2 - Turn on Output layer white
Engrave
Step 3 - Turn off White, turn on
eyes and dark blue
Step 4 - Turn off Blue, eyes, turn on
orange & pink
Step 5- Turn on Teal & Purple, Dark Orange
Step 6 Engrave outline - 52min
Step 7 - clean with isopropal alcohal or xTools Color Engraving Balm
Step 8 - comment your results

P.S In the project I replaced “teal” with mint green. Looked better.
