      For my xTool contest project, I created a **black and white painted canvas featuring a laser-engraved image of Harry Potter**. I chose this design because Harry Potter is an iconic and instantly recognizable character who represents imagination, courage, and storytelling. I wanted to combine the magic of this character with the precision of laser engraving to create a piece that feels both artistic and technically impressive.

I painted the canvas in **black and white** to create strong contrast and allow the laser engraving to stand out clearly. The black background helps reveal the engraved details, while the white areas add depth and visual balance to the overall piece. My goal was to showcase how laser engraving can transform a simple painted canvas into a striking work of art.

I made this piece to highlight both my creativity and my ability to use the xTool machine in a unique way. The project reflects my passion for design, pop culture, and experimenting with different materials to create something visually memorable.

Step 1: Prepare the Canvas

Paint the canvas evenly with spray paint .

For black canvas

Use matte black spray paint for the strongest contrast.

For white canvas

Use matte white acrylic.

Let it dry fully for at least 24 hours before engraving.

Wet or semi-cured paint can melt, bubble, or produce fumes.

Step 2: Secure the Canvas

Canvas can sag or shift.

Make sure it is:

  • perfectly flat
  • tightly stretched
  • firmly held down

If it’s soft stretched canvas, place a flat sacrificial board underneath.

Step3

Step 3: Start With Test Settings

Every laser is different, so always run a test grid first.

For diode lasers (5W–20W)

Start with:

  • Power: 15–30%
  • Speed: 2000–4000 mm/min
  • Passes: 1

For CO₂ lasers

Start with:

  • Power: 8–15%
  • Speed: 300–500 mm/s
  • Passes: 1

The goal is to remove paint without burning through the fabric.

Step 4: Engraving Black Painted Canvas

This is usually the easiest.

The laser removes the black paint and exposes the light canvas underneath.

Best settings:

  • lower power
  • faster speed
  • high DPI (300–600)

This gives a clean “etched illustration” look.

Great for:

  • portraits
  • line art
  • logos
  • text

Step5

Step 5: Engraving White Painted Canvas

This works differently.

Instead of revealing a lighter layer, the laser creates a burned darker mark.

Use:

  • slightly lower speed
  • moderate power

The result is a sepia / brown engraved effect.

This is more artistic and less crisp than black canvas.

Step 6: Use Grayscale Carefully

For photo engraving:

  • convert image to grayscale
  • increase contrast
  • sharpen edges

Black canvas especially works well for photo engraving.
