Create and assemble your own wooden bow tie

Design a wooden bow tie with your choice of shape, decorative pattern, or personalized text. You can also import your own SVG design. Adjust the dimensions, preview the result, and export your design for laser cutting. Finish your bow tie with an adjustable strap and a fabric ribbon around the center.

Materials

  • Wood suitable for laser cutting.
  • An adjustable bow tie strap with a clasp and length adjuster. (Accessory search term: adjustable bow tie strap.)
  • Fabric ribbon to sew, or adhesive fabric tape.

The traditional method is to wrap the center with fabric ribbon and sew the ends together at the back. You can sew it yourself or ask a tailor or seamstress. Adhesive fabric tape offers a simple alternative without sewing.

Before assembly

Choose your bow tie’s shape, pattern, and dimensions in the generator. Measure your strap before cutting the wooden piece:

Strap width:Measure the width of the strap laid flat.

Strap thickness: Enter the strap’s greatest thickness so it can pass through the slots during assembly.

Cut the wooden piece and sand the edges.

The tutorial photos show the version made with adhesive fabric tape.

In the generator's showcase images, you'll find a short video tutorial showing how to import a custom template from an Atomm design.

1. Prepare the strap

Open the strap clasp.

2. Thread the first slot

Pass the strap through the first slot, from back to front.

3. Thread the second slot

Pass the same end through the second slot.

4. Flatten the strap

Lay the strap flat without twisting it.

5. Prepare the center ribbon

Measure and cut the ribbon to wrap around the center, leaving an overlap at the back.

6. Wrap the center

Wrap the ribbon around the center to hide the slots.

7. Secure the ribbon at the back

Sew the ends together at the back, or stick down the adhesive tape. Keep the strap free to move.

8. Check the front

Check that the slots are hidden.

9. Fasten and adjust the strap

Close the clasp and adjust the strap to fit comfortably under your shirt collar, without tightening it around your neck.
