I'll show you how to create a graduation cap from scratch using xTool Creative Space software then turn that into a beautiful personalized centerpiece.
From the shape menu add the diamond, rectangle and heart shapes.
Resize the shapes as follows:
Select the diamond, unlock the aspect ratio and resize to: W: 4.5” x H: 2.5”
Select the rectangle, unlock the aspect ratio and resize to: W: 3” x H: 1.5”
Select the heart, unlock the aspect ratio and resize to: W: 4” x H: 2”
Take the rectangle shape and place over the diamond shape as shown in the picture. Unite the pieces.
Place the heart shape over the new shape as shown in the picture, select both pieces and “subtract”.
Add an inline of -0.12
You just created the cap!
Make a notch for the tassel to rest in.
Select the diamond from the shapes menu and size to W: 0.25” x H: 0.301”. Place as shown in image.
Select both the diamond and the outer part of the cap and choose “Subtract”
Resize the cap to W: 8.5" x H: 4.858"
Select the shape shown in the picture from the “Shapes” menu, unlock the aspect ratio and resize to: W: 2” x H: 5”
Overlap it with the cap as shown in the picture. Select both the outer part of the cap and the stand and select “Unite”.
For this next step I’m changing my settings from inches to mm. This can be done by clicking on the X, top left of your screen, Settings and click on mm.
Select the shape shown in the picture from the “Shapes” menu and duplicate it. Resize the first one to W = 114.3mm x H = 67.81mm. Draw a rectangle and size it to W = 50.8mm x H = 3mm. Center both pieces then select “Subtract at overlap” to make it a single piece.
The second shape will be processed the same as the first with the following measurements:
W = 101.6mm x H = 56.24mm and the rectangle will be W = 50mm x H = 3mm. Notice the inner dimension is slightly smaller this is to compensate for the taper of the stand.
Now all the pieces of the project are complete. Personalize them as you please. I’ve chosen to engrave a sentiment on the cap and the year on the stand.
If you want to bend the text click, hold and drag down icon shown in the picture.
Assign your layer colors.
RED - Cut
PURPLE - Engrave
I will be cutting the stand and base from 3mm basswood.
For the inner cap I have chosen 2mm black acrylic. From the materials setting I found that the 3mm Red Acrylic setting worked great. I removed the paper from the front of the acrylic only, cut, then removed the back paper.
I engraved the “2024” onto the stand, which looks great, but I decided to cut it again from the black acrylic and glued it on using E6000 glue. The engraving made it very easy to place. If you want to do this you could save some time by choosing outline instead of engraving.
I used E-6000 glue to assemble the project.
Attach the 2 base pieces together.
Glue the cap and letters to the stand.
When all pieces are dry glue the stand to the base and let dry.
Hang the tassel and your done!
