I bought 12m of 2.4mm chain from Amazon and it arrived in a bag with no way to easily store it without getting tangled. So to solve the problem I made this wooden reel that can be used to store any thin chain, rope or ribbon.
This design is very simple to make and can be made larger or smaller depending on your intended use case. With just 5 parts this reel can be made quickly from any materiel and a little glue to add extra strength.
The ends of the reed are made by drawing a circle then place two 12x4mm rectangles in the centre to make the + shape and use the combine tool to unite them into one shape.
I also wanted to make the bottom flat to stop the reel from rolling away. To do this you need to draw a rectangle slightly overlapping the circle then select both shapes and use the subtract tool.
Now that the design is ready you need to cut it from 4mm thick materiel.
The setting listed here are for cutting 4mm MDF using a 5w xTool D1 Pro.
Start by slotting the three rectangular pieces into one of the + shaped cutouts, then the circle on the other end should simply slot into place.
To add some extra strength I also added a dab of glue to each end and across all of the joins.
Your reel is now complete.
I find it best to use a little super glue to attach the end of your chain, ribbon or rope to the wood when refilling the reel.
