The sweetest gift is wildflowers picked by a child. A bouquet of dandelions is a very heartfelt prize <3 This hanging design offers a beautiful way to display those precious gifts.
Paint the back panel and sides of frame with acrylic paint color of your choice (pictured is magenta/white/silver mix) and set aside to dry. Its best to make the paint layer as even as possible for consistent cutting later in the process.
Cut a piece of 3mm basswood to the size of your frame. Pictured is 8x8". On this piece, use the file “little girl giving bouquet overlay” to cut the overlay piece.
If you have changed the scale of this piece to fit a different sized frame, please take note of the exact percentage of change!
You can now attach the overlay to the painted wood canvas. I used Loctite Professional glue. Allow drying time according to the glue manufacturer's instructions.
Place the entire piece, overlay side up, into the xtool machine. On a new workspace, import the file above named “little girl giving bouquet flower hole pattern”. Change the scale to match what was used for the overlay cut. If you are using an 8 x 8" piece, no change is necessary. After marking your workspace, cut the holes into the entire piece. The pictured piece only took one pass at these settings. The design file included for the hole pattern is slightly different than pictured with three of the holes moved slightly inward to avoid them being partially placed over the frame portion.
Please note: if you change the scale, consider what the size of the holes will be in relation to the flowers it will be holding. You may need to reduce or enlarge the holes.
Use the file above for the wood slats on the back of the piece. These pieces allow air to flow yet hold the stems down so the flowers sit nicely in the piece. The pieces shown in the pic are scraps I had available (they do not need to be painted…again, scraps) but I added the cut file in case needed. Again, use the permanent glue of your choice to attach the pieces to the back of the design.
Use 2 screw eyes, one at each end of the piece. Screw them in part way, remove them and add a drop of Loctite Professional glue, and reinsert them/finish screwing them in. Cut 20" of thin wrapping wire (copper) and place some glass beads on one half of it. Fold the other half over and give it a twist to trap the beads at various places on the wire. Insert each end into one of the screw eyes and pull it through about until the hanger portion is at your desired length. Twist the ends around the hanging wire to secure.
Wipe down the piece front and back to remove any residual char and let dry. For all surfaces, front and back, apply a minimum of three coats of a polyurethane or other water resistant/waterproof sealer. It is also helpful to use one that is UV resistant. Let the piece dry well between each coat. I prefer to spray the sealer vs brushing it to avoid picking up any residual char and spreading it around.
This piece can be used indoors and out, but will do best if not constantly exposed to the elements.
