Whether you have a favorite motocross rider or know someone passionate about the sport, this project will guide you through creating a number cutout with an engraved motocross-themed design that would make a great gift.
The base of the design is a number. For this project I have selected the number three, but of course your favorite rider may have a different number. Just play around with different fonts until you find one that has a thick body onto which you can engrave the design.
I decided to use an image of a motocross rider leaning hard into a turn for the lower half, and a checkered flag for the upper half of the design.
To help with alignment, go ahead and select the number only and use the outline tool to outline the number. This will give us the board to use for our number. We also want to use this to help move the images into the space that will not be covered up by the boarder.
Once you have everything positioned, select both the inner and outer vector of the number and copy and paste it to another canvas. Be sure to not resize anything at this point.
With the border on the next canvas, select both vectors and set up the cut processing. Now move back to the first canvas that has the images that will be engraved on the base layer. select the inner vector for the three and remove it.
In this project we have tow processes. The engrave process with run for the images and the cut process will run for the outli
You will need to run this project in as two separate jobs. First run the job to cutout the number base plate and engrave the images. Next, in a separate job, run the cut out for the second canvas
The last part is easy, just put wood glue on the back of the boarder and glue it down to the base. look over the edges and make sure the two are lined up. I chose to stain the first layer a light cherry color to give more contrast between the two layers.
