Step1: Select Your Images

To start your Buffalo USA Map Project, you'll need to choose the images you want to incorporate into your design. For this example, we'll be using a buffalo PNG file and a tattered SVG flag design. The aim is to combine these two images to create a Clipping Mask effect.

2
Step2: Create Outline of the Buffalo PNG Image

Next, create an outline of the buffalo PNG image. Using a stroke width of 0.02 will produce a tight outline that will be crucial for future steps.

In Creative Space, select the buffalo PNG image, then locate the option for adding a stroke or outline. Set the stroke width to 0.02 to achieve the desired tightness.

After applying the outline, take a moment to review the image and ensure that the outline complements the buffalo's shape without overpowering it.

This precise outline will play a significant role in the subsequent steps of your Buffalo USA Map Project.

Step3: Align Images and Create Mask

Once you have your buffalo PNG and tattered SVG flag ready, it's time to align them in Creative Space. Place the PNG image over the SVG image at your desired location.

Next, select both images and look for the option to create a mask.

After selecting the option to create a mask, you'll see a preview of how the images will be combined. Take a moment to review the preview and make any necessary adjustments to the positioning or size of the images.

Once you're satisfied with the preview, click on the “Done” option to finalize the mask. Your images will then be merged into one, creating the desired Clipping Mask effect.

Step4: Align Objects and Apply Thick Border

Now that you have both the buffalo PNG image and the tattered SVG flag aligned, let's ensure they are perfectly centered using the align tool. Use the vertical and horizontal align options to position them precisely.

Once aligned, select the outer outline of the combined images. Apply another outline, this time with a setting of 0.25. This will create a thick border around the entire composition, adding depth to your design.

After applying the thick border, review the overall appearance of the composition to ensure it meets your expectations.

Now, you're ready to proceed to the next step and apply your cut settings. Make sure your cut settings are adjusted according to the materials you're using and the desired outcome of your Buffalo USA Map Project.

5
Step5: Prepare Back and Front Pieces

To prepare for the construction of your Buffalo USA Map Project, make two copies of your combined image. One copy will serve as the back piece, while the other will be applied to the front of your project.

For the back piece, adjust your cut settings to cut along the outline of the entire project. This will create the base on which the front pieces will be mounted. Additionally, the details of the flag will be scored on the wood to ensure accurate placement of the front pieces.

On the front piece, set your cut settings to cut only. This will allow you to precisely cut out the individual pieces that will be mounted onto the back piece.

Ensure that your cut settings are adjusted appropriately for the type of wood you're using and the thickness of the material.

By preparing both the back and front pieces in this manner, you'll be ready to assemble your Buffalo USA Map Project with precision and accuracy.

Step6: Cut and Assemble the Pieces

First, load basswood plywood onto your laser cutter for the back piece of your Buffalo USA Map Project. Set your cut and score settings according to your design, ensuring precision in both cutting and scoring.

Next, load walnut plywood for the front piece, which will be cut only. Adjust your cut settings accordingly.

Once the wood is cut, carefully remove the pieces from the laser cutter.

Now, it's time to assemble your project. Apply wood glue to the back of the front pieces and carefully attach them to the corresponding scored areas on the back piece.

As you can see from the image above, each cut produces two projects. One project will be inverted, while the other will protrude, creating a stunning 3D effect.

Allow the glue to dry completely before sanding and applying finish to your project.

Step7: Sand and Apply Finish

Now that your Buffalo USA Map Project is assembled, it's time to add the finishing touches to enhance its appearance and durability.

Start by sanding the surface of your project to smooth out any rough edges or imperfections. Use fine-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.

After sanding, wipe away any dust or debris from the surface of the project.

Next, apply your chosen finish to the wood. Whether you prefer a clear varnish to highlight the natural beauty of the wood or a stain to add depth and richness, ensure that the finish is applied evenly across the entire surface.

Allow the finish to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions before handling or displaying your project.

With the pieces assembled and finished, your Buffalo USA Map Project will not only showcase the beauty of Buffalo, New York, but also add a unique 3D dimension to your space.
