Puzzles have long been an excellent kids toy. This project will walk you through creating your own puzzle with your xtool laser out of basswood plywood. Being cut on a light natural wood surface, the puzzle can be painted once complete for additional fun!
For this project the two main components are the image you want to engrave and the puzzle pattern. The included project files have these included, but you may want to download your own for your project. If you do, simply drag and drop the image and SVG into the canvas and XCS will import them as needed.
The next step is to resize the puzzle pattern and the image to match the size of the material you are using. I am using a 11.8 inch by 11.8 inch sheet of basswood plywood, and I want to use the entire sheet.
This project has two processes, an engrave and cut process. The attached settings are for a D1 with a 5W laser. You may need to adjust your settings to match your laser setup.
Lastly, place an entire sheet of plywood in the laser work area. Since this will have a cut process, you will need to elevate the material off of the surface you are engraving on.
Be sure to follow all the safety rules that go with your laser and always wear personal protective equipment when the laser is in operation.
Once the design is cut out, just pull away any excess material from the perimeter and separate the puzzle pieces.
