Step 1: Prepare Your Design

  • Open the split mom image provided in the file using your preferred design software.
  • Choose a font for your custom text. For this example, we're using the Heart Style Font.
  • If you don't have the Heart Style Font, you can find similar fonts online. There are many free and paid font resources available.

  • Select your custom text in the design software.
  • Click on the "Outline" tool.
  • Adjust the outline size as desired. In this example, the default setting used is 0.079. However, feel free to choose your own setting based on your preference and project requirements.
  • Once you've set your desired size for the outline, click "Apply" to finalize the changes.

  • Select the split mom image and the outline from the text you created in your design software.
  • Ensure that you do not select the actual text itself.
  • With both elements selected, click on the "Combine" tool.
  • This will merge the split mom image and the outline into a single element.

  • Select the newly created element, which is a combination of the split mom image and the outline from the text.
  • Click on the "Outline" tool button.
  • Choose your desired outline size. In this example, a setting of 0.6 is used to create a substantial outline.
  • Feel free to adjust the outline size according to your preference.
  • Once you've selected your desired outline size, click the "Apply" button to generate the outline.

  • Ensure that the wood you choose is suitable for laser cutting.
  • Before proceeding, verify that you have the correct cut settings for your chosen wood. The settings provided in this example are tailored to the specific types of wood I used (maple and walnut plywood).

  • Load the piece of wood into your laser engraving machine.
  • Ensure that the 1/4" walnut wood is positioned as the back piece of the project.
  • Use the appropriate cut and engrave settings for the 1/8” maple wood. These settings should be specific to your laser machine and the type of wood being used.
  • Perform all necessary cuts and engravings according to your design.
  • Once the cuts and engravings are completed, the 1/8” maple pieces will be ready to be placed on top of the walnut cutout.

Step 7: Assemble the Project

  • Begin by wiping down the materials to clear any residue left from the cutting and engraving process.
  • Apply CA glue to the back of the maple cutout.
  • Carefully position the maple cutout on top of the walnut back piece, ensuring proper alignment.
  • Allow the pieces to dry completely to ensure a secure bond.
  • Once the glue is dry, inspect your project for any additional cleaning areas or touch-ups needed.
