Information
I rarely use the "score" feature of the laser, but recently needed a sign to inform guests that a laser was in use. I designed a "Caution - Laser Area" sign. Then I expanded this to a personalized sign for our hot tub area at home.

Signs are easy to make but look professionally made!

Instruction
1
Step1: Design your Sign.

Design your sign for how you want it to look and what to say. Be sure everything is centered and spaced apart properly.

Don't forget to “weld” your letters together.

Step2: Prepare your material.

Start by painting the entire background of your sign. Wait for it to completely dry before moving on.

When dry, the key in making your sign is to mask off your material. I use 6" wide painters' tape, but any width of tape can be used. At times, 12" would be better to use as it'll reduce the chance of having a slight gap between the two rows of tape.

After taping your material, be sure to get any bubbles and lines out. I use a small scrap piece of wood and scrape the tape to remove any bubbles. You want to the tape to be as smooth as possible to create clean lines.

Step3: Score your sign and prep for painting.

Use your laser to score the sign.

When finished, you'll need to carefully remove the masking tape from the areas you want your lettering and design to be painted. Some of these areas can get pretty fine. I prefer to use a dental “probe” to assist getting the tape off.

Ensure the tape is down well and not leaving any gaps for paint to flow into. You want clean lines with your masking tape.

Step4: Paint your lettering and design.

Now that your sign is painted for the background, then covered with masking tape and the tape covering the lettering and design has been removed, you're ready to paint the lettering and details.

For many signs, you can use a spray paint for this area (the Laser sign was black spray paint) or you can sponge or brush on your lettering paint (the Hot Tub sign).

Step5: Finalize!

Once your detailed paint has dried, carefully remove the remaining masking tape from your sign. Again, there may be some very fine areas that need to have tape removed from.

Add any special designer touches to your sign (like a hanging rope) and enjoy your professionally looking sign!
