Information
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of creating a laser-engraved cutout of the word “MOM” that’s not just a symbol of love but also a practical addition to her kitchen. This isn’t just any cutout; it comes with a cleverly designed spoon holder on top, perfect for keeping cooking utensils within reach and countertops clean.

Instruction
1
Step1: start with text
Preview

Since the foundation of this project is the text “Mom” let's start by entering it onto the canvas.  You will want to go ahead and establish the size of the text at this point.

2
Step2: Adjust text if needed
Preview

With the font I selected for this project, I thought it needed to be rotated a little to get the bottom edge of the letters on the same level.  I then added a rectangle to connect all the letters across the bottom.  This will add stability  to the design as well as the connection.

Step3: Round the edges of the base

Next, I added the square with rounded corners shape to the design.  I placed these over the ends of the rectangle and used the combine tool to unite the two vectors.  This simply gives the base rounded edges

Step4: Create the spoon holder supports
Preview

Next, I added a rectangle and a circle to begin building the supports for the spoon holder.  I used the combine tool again to unite these two shapes.

5
Step5: Subtract to create the holder
Preview

Add another circle to subtract a trough to hold the spoon.  This process leaves very sharp points where the two circles intersect, but we will fix that in the next step.

6
Step6: Fix the sharp edges
Preview

The simple solution to fixing the sharp points is to add a square with rounded edges to each side of the supports.  Use the combine tool to unite the two shapes which will build  volume to the supports.

7
Step7: Create a second support

We now need to create a second support, but it will need to be shorter.  At first thought you may want to resize the shape, however this will skew the proportions which would change the top support.  We want to simply make the column of this support shorter.  To do this, I copied the support and lowered it on the canvas.  I could visually line it up with the “Mom” text and the first support.  Once it was in a good position, I used  a rectangle to subtract from the lower part of the support

Step8: Cut and Assemble

All processing is a cut for this project.  Be sure to follow all the safety rules that go with your laser and always wear personal protective equipment when the laser is in operation.

Once the parts were cut out, I used wood glue to attach all the “mom” cutouts to the spoon supports.  This was a little tricky, but a couple of clamps will help out.
