For my craft show I attended in March I needed a little color chart for all mz yarn colors to choose from. So I looked up how I can do it and stuck to the simple version by creating a Rectangle with rounded edges and a lot of holes for the yarn to knot to.

  1. Create a Rectangle
  2. Count your yarn and create that much circles, for this you can use the Grid Array application to easily make duplicates with similar distance in between.
  3. Align the circles close the the edges of the rectangle
  4. Use the subtraction feature to turn it into a solid shape
  5. For me I added then the names of the colors to make it easy to grab them at the show but you can also write like the color number (As I use a specific font for my business I wrote them in Adobe Illustrator and imported as svg as the font isn’t available inside XCS)

I like to organize my files in GREEN = Engrave and RED = Cut.

I‘m using the M1, you might need different settings depending also on the material you want to use, so please make a test cut before doing the complete job.

  • Just Add a tiny circle and use the cut settings, if it‘s working good for you otherwise turn up the power a bit or lower the speed.

I also like to turn on the air assist a bit while engraving to get a better result, but don‘t use to much air as it blows the burned rests all over the place leaving more marks on your project.
To prevent it at all use masking tape and bring the Engraving power a bit up. You only need to get rid afterwards of the tape and have a clean result.

Step3: Add yarn to the Chart

Everthing you need to do to finish this project is to knot all your yarns through the holes. This takes some time but can be done as side thing and watching some TV.

I glued the yarn on the backside to the wood so it doesn’t get off of it.
