Step1: Creating the Flower Head

Find a picture of a flower to trace

Use the vector edit tool and create all of the outer main points

Select the outsides of the petals and set those to Perfect Symmetry

Adjust the outer vectors to generally match your picture until you are happy with it

Step2: Creating the inner petals and flower center

Now do the same to trace some inner lines to your petals so that you can see the individual petals.  I generally left the two closest to the center as is and set the other nodes in each petal to Perfect Symmetry and then adjusted and tweaked from there.  The beautiful thing about flowers is that it's really not important for them to be exact so you get to just have some fun with it.

Now take away the original drawing so you can see the full flower and decide if any further adjustments need to be made.  This is where I can see if an edge looks to sharp and might need a little smoothing out.

Select all of the inner pieces and Combine them.  Then make sure to select Move to Front for this piece.  Now Subtract it from the main flower.  I like to set it to engrave at this point just to get an idea of what the cutout will look like and then I set it back to Cut.

Step3: Adding a Stem

Now you need a stem.  I make a real quick one with about 6 or 7 points and then set the points that are not touching the flower to Perfect Symmetry.  Zoom in on the part that does touch the flower and make sure they overlap.  Click Done and then select the flower and the stem and choose Combine.

Step4: Make a Vase

Make a couple copies of the flower in varying heights for a "boquet".  You'll want to put them in a vase so to decide what the vase looks like I overlapped my flower stems.  I created a circle on top of this and did a vector edit to flatten the base.  Make a copy of this and set it aside.  On the first copy do a Vector Edit and add a space for the stems to fit inside of.  This will be the inner parts of the vase.  If you have more than one flower you'll need a few of them so that all flowers can fit.  Copy the piece you set aside before so you have two as these are the front and back of the vase.  Set all pieces to cut.  Maybe you want to add an engraved message to the front of the vase?

Step5: Cut and Assembly

Cut out your pieces.  Note that the vase is on Canvas2 of the project.  I used basswood for the vase and acrylic for the flowers but you could also make the flowers from wood and paint them.

Glue together your vase and insert the flowers.  So cute!!  Mom is going to love it.
