Information
I just got my F1 and decided to try out some fun Easter files! I love silly earrings for many occasions and Easter is no different. I saw a similar project on a door hanger with a bunny backside and thought those would be cute earrings. I'll take you through the steps I took to make them, from design to finishing touches.

Step1: Design

I used Adobe Illustrator to design my file. I started with ovals, used the curvature tool for the bunny feet and tail, and used shapebuilder to remove excess lines. I edited the design so that the cut lines would be pink and anything scored would be green. This helps when uploading into XCS. Luckily you don't have to this! All you have to do is open it in XCS! You can use this process for other files however. I tend to make my stud earrings right around .5 inch. The necklace can be any desired size.

  1. Design desired file in any program.
  2. Save as an SVG.
  3. Open XCS.
  4. Click Import Image.
  5. Select the file.
  6. Resize as desired.

Step2: Settings

Once you open the file in XCS, you'll need to input the correct settings for each step. You'll see that you can click the color circle to set settings for those lines that correspond to that color in the design. I clicked the yellow circle to select all of those colored lines. These inner lines in the bunny are my score lines. I set those to score and used the preselected 3mm basswood settings. I clicked the red circle to select the outside cut lines. I used the preset for 3mm basswood settings for this as well. These settings worked good for this project.

  1. Click yellow circle to select score lines.
  2. Set settings for score 3mm basswood.
  3. Click Red circle to select outside lines.
  4. Set settings for cut 3mm basswood.

Step3: Cut

I set up the cut tray in the F1and put the 3mm basswood on it, pressed the cut button and watched it go. It took a minute and 30 seconds.

  1. Set up cut tray in F1.
  2. Place material on cut tray.
  3. Set focus. I have not set mine up to do the automatic focus yet. I twisted the silver knob until both laser dots came together.
  4. Click Process, start, then hit the silver knob and monitor the cutting/scoring.

Step4: Paint and Seal

I used Tooli-Art acrylic paint pens to paint these. They work well for very detailed things. The score lines also help because it helps reduce the ink from spreading beyond where you want a color. You don't have to do it exact because you can go back with another color and touch up if needed. You may need to do a few layers for the white. I allow the paint to dry overnight and then seal them using Krylon clear triple thick spray that I get from Amazon or any home store. I allow that to dry for 24 hours. This gives it some protection and adds a glossy layer. Make sure you do this in a well ventilated area.

  1. Paint if desired.
  2. Let dry 24 hours or follow directions of your paint.
  3. Seal with desired sealant.
  4. Allow to dry following the sealant instructions.

Step5: Attach hardware

For the earrings you need to attach the posts. I get 316 surgical steel grade posts from Adabele on Amazon to avoid any skin irritation. I use loctite gel superglue and glue the posts on the back. I've heard you can secure them better with UV resin but I have not experimented with that yet. I make sure the posts are pressed all the way to the wood and let it sit for a minute then press down again. I let this sit for 24 hours to make sure it is secure. The necklace you can attach to desired necklace using a jump ring from Amazon. There are pinch closure ones as well if you don't want to use pliers with the jump ring.

  1. Turn earring over and place a dot of loctite gel in the center.
  2. Place the post onto the gel and press down.
  3. Wait a minute and press down again. I use Cricut tweezers to push down all around the post.
  4. Allow to dry for 24 hours.
  5. Place a jump ring through the hole in the necklace.
  6. String a necklace chain through the jump ring.
  7. Use small pliers to close the jump ring
  8. Wear and Enjoy!
