This year, we're creating a large garden and to ensure everything is organized, we've decided to label the rows with custom laser-engraved tags. This easy project will help you stay organized and add a personal touch to your garden space
We first need to begin to build the shape of our garden labels. I imagined a small sign with rounded corners. To achieve this, we first need to start with a trapezoid shape so that we have a taper for the part that will stick in the ground. I use the unlock for the length and width so that I can stretch the shape out.
The end of the trapezoid is still sort of blunt, so let's sharpen it. Insert a rectangle and rotate it so that it is at a little less that 45 degrees. Next cop the rectangle and mirror it. Bring the two rectangles together and form a V shape.
Select both rectangles and move them over the end of the trapezoid. Select all three shapes and then use the “combine” tool and the “subtract” function to achieve a point on the end of the shape.
Add in a circle or any shape to the top and again use the combine tool to achieve the desired shape.
Step 1 Video guide:
In this step, simply resize the overall shape so that it fits the container or size of plant. You will also want to add text at this time for the label. I am adding in the text for cucumbers. Of course, be creative and decorate the tag however you like. You can even add in images or a decorative boarder.
Step 2 Video Guide:
In this step, set the parameters that are appropriate for your laser. You may need to run a test file to see what setting work the best for your laser. I am using the xtool D1 with a 5W laser, so my settings may not work for your setup.
Once you have your cut and engrave settings entered. You can simply copy and paste the design to batch create multiple garden labels in one job. After copying, you can simply edit the text as needed.
I like to rotate the design to try and maximize the material used. You can play around with positioning until you see the least amount of waste around your cutout.
Step 4 Video Guide:
I hope this simple project helps demonstrate the techniques needed to create a new design and replication for those that are new to laser engraving. Have fun and remember to follow all safety guidance that is related to your laser. Always wear your personal protective equipment.
