I made this as a test of assembling rack and pinion (gears) for an eventual project to make a safe.
Note that this project requires 1/4 inch (6 mm) dowel

This project requires three (3) dowels 10 mm long cut from ¼ inch (6 mm) dowel.
Note that the pictured parts do not include an additional “cover” T. I added that later to show the gears better.
Insert dowels into the three (3) vertical holes. They are cut to be a pressure fit - a light tap from a hammer may help.
Add the gears and assemble the key.
You can test the construction to be sure everything moves smoothly.
Place the T cover to align with the dowel and the key.
There are two T covers in the cut file - the thinner cover is a loose fit, easy to remove and shows the gears better. That fatter cover is a pressure fit and intended to be on permanently.
Don't press the cover down too are, as it will catch the gears. A think piece of cardboard as a spacer will insure enough clearance.
