Information

Did I need a protractor? No. Was this a fun project? Yes!

I haven't used a protractor in over 15 years, but I also didn't want to create just a ruler. I thought it would be fun to make something that I haven't seen in a while. I might end up making a set with a ruler and right angle ruler too, just for fun!

All I used was some 1.5MM scrap basswood and clear satin polycrylic. See below for how I did this project. If I had to do it over, I would make my power settings for the engraving a little higher so they are a bit deeper. I would also redo the tracing on the numbers, as they came out a bit distorted.

  1. I Googled images of protractors.
  2. I imported the picture into Silhouette Studio where I used the trace function to get the outline of the measurements and shape of the protractor.
    1. This step may be different for everyone, so just mess around with the settings of the trace tool until you get something you like.
  3. I saved the outline as a .svg file to import into XCS.

Step2: Open file in XCS and adjust settings

  1. I dragged and dropped my SVG into XCS
  2. I verified that the SVG looks correct on my material.
  3. I added an outline to the shape that would end up being my cut line.
  4. I click on the lines and numbers and switched those settings to engrave (please read “settings” in step 5 for more info on what settings I used).

Step3: Prepare to engrave

  1. Select the cut line we made in step 3 and click “ignore” in the menu to the right. This tells the machine to ignore that particular action until otherwise told.
  2. Make sure your numbers and lines are set to engrave (read settings for settings info).
  3. Load your material and refresh the camera to position everything correctly.
  4. Frame your project to make sure you are cutting on your material exactly where you want.
  5. Send your project to the machine and press the start button on your machine.
4

Step4: Prepare to cut

  1. DO NOT touch your project after it is done engraving. Leave it in the machine.
  2. In XCS, select the numbers and lines and click “ignore” in the menu on the right.
  3. Then select your cut outline and click “output”. This tells the machine to do this action.
    1. Make sure you cut outline is set to cut (read settings for more info).
  4. Send your project to your machine then push the button on your machine.

**The reason you want to do your cut line last is because you don't want the material to move around after it has been cut to avoid your engravings getting messed up.

Step5: Wipe down to prepare for finish

  1. Lightly sand your project's surface with 220 grit paper or a 220 grit block
  2. Wipe clean with a damp paper towel so there is no debris when you seal it.
  3. I also went around the edges to make sure they were smooth with no bumps. Afterall, this is a protractor. You want it as round and smooth as possible.

Step6: Spray with your favorite sealant

  1. Follow your sealants directions to finish off your project.
  2. Follow the Minwax clear satin polycrylic:
    1. Spray 8 to 10 inches away.
    2. Wait 30 minutes in between each coat and make sure to sand with 22 grit before you add a layer.
    3. 3 layers is recommended.
    4. After 24 hours, wipe down with a wet rag.
