Was having a bit of a moody day when I saw the Almake Contest, and just ran with that ... letting my mood dictate the whole direction of my design lol. So, here's a Curse Supply Box, so that you have some voodoo supplies and magic on hand next time you're having a moody day!
The bat winged snake and cobweb image was designed with the Almake Ai image maker from my description prompt. I used this AI created Image as the basis to create my project, however I did edit and alter parts of the AI created image until it was cooler lol. I then added word text and digitally drew a pentagram for the back of the box before imagining and creating the rest of this project and design. Using the XTOOL Studio Box maker tool to create a hinged book box to my decided dimensions. I edited the created book box to have extra holes, gaps and altered parts so that the box could be secured and locked with straps, screws and extra design features... turning the book box into a lockable book box BAG. I then measured, drew with shape tools and created the strap holders for the bag (A few times, until I got the lengths and sizes right so you can just cut it once lol). All cuttable in a single canvas file!
Note: This project uses 4mm Chicago Screws (or you can use any 4mm screw with bag hooks), Wood & Leather. Option to Add a Metal bag strap, keychain and D rings.
That's how this project was designed.... pretty please like, bookmark and download it so that hopefully I can win enough to save for a Co2 laser or F2 Laser to allow me to finally make translucent, pearl projects and designs that I can share! (fingers crossed lol)
01a. Download the attached XTool Studio file or Lightburne File
01b. Open File <(^.^)> and position your wood material on the lazerbed to cut the Box Parts
01c. Move the image in the program and align your lazer with the material so as to avoid material wastage. Make sure to set the correct processing parameters for your material, check it's set to output and cutting. For Jarrah, Victorian Pine or Ash Plywood, the cut setting on my S1 20w is PWR 100 SPD 6.27. This is because the glue is thicker inside this ply, but it's lazer safe and formaldehyde free.
01e. Laser Engrave and Cut the Box Parts.
01f. Place some leather on your laser machine. Select the Strap Parts and laser cut them. For Kangaroo Leather, my laser settings were power 100 speed 26.
02a. Clean your parts. I used a water tray with a paper towel to quickly dry my project. You can run it under a tap too but avoid any wet paint areas for 24 hours! Make sure to rub any edges to remove smoke marks and ash from the Lazer cutting process, because no one wants ashy smoke stains on their clothes. If there are stubborn smoke marks or the wood is rough, lightly sand it, if you used acrylic no sanding. Pat dry thoroughly on a towel, paper towel or tissues immediately after to stop any plywood separation that happens when there's too much moisture on unvarnished wood, which in some cases can cause the veneer separation as the water affects the wood glues.
02b. After they are dry. Varnish them. Any remaining smokey residue will be set into the varnish, making these perfectly touch safe.
02c. Let Wood Parts Dry.
Note 01: I use a water-based wood varnish, less toxic vapor wise (yay) easy water cleanup.
Note 02: You can use a big brush to varnish quickly in 1-2 minutes, however I prefer to use a tiny brush so that I can take my time (30minutes lol) and get the varnish evenly on the design and perfectly into all those little nooks and cut edges without leaving too much excess varnish.
Note 03: Make sure you varnish the edges where there is the most smoke residue to seal them up.
Note 04: Varnish does change the tone of the wood, Jarrah becomes darker and richer with clear varnish and Victorian Ash gets a bolder wood grain when varnished.
Note 05: If your wood comes pre-varnished, still do this step of prep and varnish, except instead of varnishing the top and back of your cut parts, avoid the already varnished surface and varnish the lazercut edges along the side to stop that smokey residue marking hands and clothes.
03a. Assemble The Box Parts and glue the sides, top and bottom together. See image example.
03b. Get your chicago screws and leather parts. Put the screw into the second hole, fold the first under and into the screw then screw that through the wood. Repeat for all 3 holes. This looped screwed section of the straps doubles as a strap securing spot if you have a metal bag strap like the one in the picture. ALSO, if you have some D rings, you can slip them onto that folded strap part before screwing it into the wood so you can make a fancier bag strap hook holder.
OPTIONAL 03b. Instead of the leather strap for the sides, you can instead screw into those holes some metal hardware that you can buy, but personally I prefer the cute handbag side strap option because it means you can use the bag as a purse style or a cross body by adding the chain.
03c. With the closing strap, do the same foldover screw to wood steps. If you want, add a keychain to the folded loop leather part before securing it to the wood. This makes for a convenient bag hanging back. ALSO, if you don't have a lock to lock your leather closing strap closed, you can use the holes for the lock to add a magnet clasp or a button clasp because the 2 holes line up perfectly <3 I measured it exactly so you can add whatever closure you like, however I prefer the lock because it's a curse box lol.
That's it <3 Hope you enjoyed my cute purse book box with curse design… Took a while to get the adjustments right to make it a functioning book bag that locks, but I'm pretty happy with the results. Hope you are too! Follow me for more designs and makes!!!
