I made this as a test to see if I could get Marquetry to go well with a laser. This was the first part for me to figure out before I get into more complicated pieces.
First I tested the power and speeds I wanted to use. Based on the veneer I bought from Woodcraft it looked like 70 power and a speed of 175 mm/s would give me the proper depth on the maple wood that I was looking for.
Then I cut out the hexagons that I wanted. As this was a test piece I didn't want to waste too much material so each hexagon was .375 inches tall. I ran the cut at 100 power and 20mm/s.
I made quite a few test cuts. I ended up going with 0.008 inch interior offset (due to the kerf of the laser) of the hexagons into the maple wood. Which gave me the correct size for the little hexagons to inlay in nicely into the wood. As I tested earlier the power was 70% and the speed was 175mm/s.
I just used CA glue and glued the little hexagons into the wood and lightly sanded it. I would probably put a tiny bit of glue on the small spaces and sand it so there is no gaps.
