Information

There is nothing like curling up with a good book in the back yard while enjoying the transition from summer to fall. I can look up and watch the leaves turn, feel the cool wind and enjoy a cup of coffee as I turn the pages. When I see something interesting, I put in my bookmark and take the time to truly appreciate the view of nature around me.
I started creating bookmarks almost from the beginning of my laser journey. However, it was not until recently that I feel I got ones that were worthy to share. So here is my bookmark library thus far. There are included 31 designs/quotes which also includes 5 horror themed ones recently made. Included as well are a blank regular bookmark and butcher knife bookmark so you can create your own.
Each bookmark is approximately 5" long by 1.5" wide.
NOTE: Some of the art included here is made with AI while others were created by me. Still other art is of public domain and downloaded to be incorporated in the bookmarks. Each bookmark was created by me, however.

Step1: Before you begin

Bookmarks are a staple at my booth. They are easy to make and sell fairly well and I can usually go through about 100 per event. They take very little material and I usually make them from scrap and/or while working on other plans or projects on other machines.
I started making bookmarks fairly early in my laser career and found that they are in higher demand than I thought they would be.
The settings included do not give a deep and dark engrave as to do so would actually burn through such thin material. I can say, though, that most people actually like that muted look on them.

When making these, keep in mind that the settings provided do mean that they can take a little bit of time to do them. To engrave, score and cut 16 took my P2 approximately 60 minutes, but again, I only do this when I am not using my machine for anything else so it does help keep my costs down.

NOTE: Bookmarks need to be thin. No one wants a thick bookmark. Don't use anything 1/8" or thicker as they do not sell very well - unless you really want to that is.

If you use any other machine and/or material than what I use, you will need to adjust your settings accordingly.

I may include more bookmarks as time goes on. If I do, I will update these plans to include them and change the title to include a date of update, so keep checking back.

Step2: Cut your Bookmarks

Select and align your bookmarks onto your material. Once that is done, and if you are using the P2, use the settings above for your selected bookmarks. Some of them are strictly scored and cut, others are engraved and cut, and still others score, engrave and cut.

There is one note here about the engrave. Some of the engraves have slightly higher density. It is really a matter of preference to use that. You could make all of them the same density and it will still turn out ok.

Once you have keyed in your settings, process your project.

Step3: Cleaning up the bookmarks

After they are done, I take my bookmarks and run 220 sandpaper over them to remove burn marks. It takes very little time and I can usually sand 16 within 5 minutes. Do not put a lot of pressure on them, especially with an electric sander, as thin wood snaps easily.

At this point, you could say you are finished or you could add flair to the holes at the top if you desire. Things like ribbon or tassels are nice additions. I usually do not add these as it increases the cost of the bookmark dramatically.

Step4: Final Thoughts

I hope you like this project and look forward to hearing what you think of it. Let me know in the comments. If you have settings that make your bookmarks look better, let me know that as well. Show me some pictures, too.
If you like this project, check out my other projects that I have available. Most are free to download and I do have a few premium ones. Give them a look and see if anything else catches your eye. I would love to hear what you have to say about those too.
