Information

I had seen similar designs before and decided to try my hand at it. I came up with this and thought it was so easy to do. Simple and satisfying, this spiraled wooden bowl achieves a sense of practical functionality while still being beautiful to look at. Perfect for holding wrapped candies or small goods, this bowl is sure to be a center piece on your table.

IMPORTANT! This bowl is not made to hold a huge amount of weight. It is decorative and can hold a bag of wrapped candies, fruits, or, as I am using it for, small items for sale.

It is important to note that this is a project that can be done with any thickness of wood. However, if under ¼" thickness, your bowl may not hold a lot in regards to weight or quantity.

Another thing to note is that this particular bowl is set with a number of “rings”. You can remove outer rings to acheive the width and depth of the bowl you desire. As it currently stands, this bowl measures just under 12" wide by just over 3" deep.

I strongly recommend a fine tip added to your adhesive bottle. This will make assembly a lot easier and not have a lot of squeeze out during assembly. You can also use the tip to press in the glue during the final clean up. More in step 4 on this.

Step2: Cut out your pieces

Cut out the bowl “rings” using the settings provided above.

Once you have them cut out and before removing them from your machine, run a strip of tape all the way across so that all the pieces are held together. If you like and to make it easier, run a strip across multiple times. (See the first photo).

Sand the surface on the opposite side from the taped sides until all burn marks are removed. Tape up that side and flip it. Remove all the tape that you initially put on and then sand that side to remove any burn marks.

When you are satisfied with how both sides appear, proceed to the next step.

The first time you do this, you will want to go slow and “dry” fit each layer before putting glue on. When you set a layer down, you will shift it slowly clockwise until the points line up and touch a side wall of the layer beneath it. (See the 2nd photo attached to this step) Work from your largest ring, the top of the bowl, and add each progressively smaller layer in the same way until you add the solid piece on the bottom.

For each layer, you want just a drop of glue at the corners at the very outside edge. (See photos 3 and 4 attached to this step). Place the piece down as stated above and shift it until all points meet the side walls of the piece beneath.

Do this for each layer.

Step4: Clean up Assembly

What clean up assembly means is that you are going to take a few minutes to strengthen the bond of each layer.

Take your glue and, using the fine tip, run a bead along where the wood layers meet on the outside of the bowl. After you run that bead of glue, go back with the fine tip and “press” it into the joint. This will help to make the bowl joints stronger.

If you are comfortable doing this and not getting a lot of build up of glue, you can also do the same to the interior of the bowl to help strengthen it even more.

Step5: Final Notes

I really enjoyed making this and hope you do as well. It is possibly one of the easiest projects I have ever made. If you make this and/or have ideas to improve it, leave a comment below and let me know.

If you like this project, support me by checking out my other projects at the following link. I have a few premium projects but I carry mostly free to download designs. Leave a comment on what you thought of this project and how I may be able to improve it. I would genuinely love to know what you think of this.
