I recently bought a tiered tray and have been working on making items to put on it. One of the things I love are the holiday beaded garlands. I found one at the dollar tree that was already premade but had a tacky charm. For the price I bought it knowing I would remake the charm. I started with the pot of gold file from Tony and went from there. Be sure to read until the very end. I made a mistake trying to make the rainbow and I kept it in to show what I did wrong and how I fixed it.
I opened the pot of Gold file and deleted the words. I wanted to add handles so I added a letter C to the canvas, copied it and flipped it and add each C to either side of the pot, highlighted just the pot outline and the 2 C's and united. I then wanted to add a shamrock to the pot. Added 3 hearts to the canvas and a coma. Arranged them into a shamrock shape and again clicked on combine, unite. I ended up with a few little pieces inside, which I just removed by putting a circle around them and clicking on combine subtract.
Next was the cloud. I simply overlapped a bunch of different size circles and ovals and then selected all and clicked on combine, unite to get a cloud shape. There was one little piece that was in the middle, and I simply placed a small circle around it and selected both and clicked on combine, subtract.
You'll see once I do this step and go on to the next one that I realized my error, but I'm keeping this part in to share where I went wrong and how I ultimately did it right.
I started with an oval. I then did an outline of that oval. I then selected the outline and did another outline the same size. I repeated this until I had 8 Ovals. I then added a rectangle and placed the top of it where I wanted the rainbow to end, and the bottom past the bottom of the ovals. I selected all the ovals and chose combine, subtract at overlap. I then sent this image to the back, selected it and then the rectangle and chose combine subtract. You'll see in a moment why this did not work for what I needed.
To make my final shape I needed to combine the rainbow, cloud and pot. I needed a bottom layer that the cloud and pot would sit on, so I made a copy of the cloud and the pot of of gold without the coins and lip. I then placed the cloud and pot on opposite side of the rainbow and selected all and did combine unite. Do you see my error yet?????
Thinking I was done, I went to cut up my cut and score layers…..Oh BOY!!! Yep, I realized at this moment that I had no way of separating out the rainbow score lines. What to do. I realized at this moment that the only way to do it that I could think of was to add the lines manually, and that's what I did.
Using the vector tool, I drew a line and then clicked on the right node and bent the line so that it lined up with the second line of the rainbow. Then I copy and pasted that line 5 more times. I then used the lines already on the rainbow as guide on how to shape my vector lines. It didn't matter how they looked on the ends because the cloud and pot I would be glued over it. Once those lines were how I wanted them I selected them all and chose combine subtract at overlap to combine them.
Once this was done, I used the vector function to make a shape that surrounded the inner lines of the rainbow. I then chose the shape outline and the vector and did combine subtract. You can see where i missed a few pieces and had to outline the inner pieces a second time to remove all of them. Once this was done I moved the lines I had combined back into place. These could now be scored while the other shape could be cut.
I resized the file height based on the size of the original charm that came with the garland. It was then that I found it was much wider than the charm. I then decided to reduce the size of the width but keeping the height. To do this I selected everything BUT the shamrock and clicked on the lock and manually squeezed the file until it was approximately the same width as the charm. The reason I didn't include the shamrock was because it was very small and would have become very distorted.
I then set up a blue layer for the cut items and a yellow layer for the score items. If you notice I turned the lip of the pot from the original setting of engrave to cut to give it more depth. I also added a small circle to thread the jute through.
I sent the file to my P2 and cut and scored the items. I then painted the pot with a black paint pen. The coins I used a furniture marker in the color of oak. The cloud I used a white paint pen and for the rainbow I used Tooli extra fine paint markers. They work so great on small items like this and earrings. The shamrock I painted green.
I glued everything together and when dry thread the jute of the garland though the rainbow and tied a knot. Here is a picture of the original charm and my updated version. What do you think?
