Excellent as gifts for friends, family, teachers, etc. Uses laser engraving to create recess to receive inlay, and aluminum foil engraving to create veneer wooden inlay.
Instruction
Step1: Engrave Veneer Inlay
Apply aluminum tape to piece of wood veneer. The CO2 laser cannot cut through aluminum. Engrave the logo/name/image (reversed horizontally) with two passes. The first removes all the unwanted wood. The second removes unwanted adhesive residue.
Step2: Engrave Base
Engrave the phone stand base with the logo/name/image (not reversed horizontally). Make sure the engraving depth is slightly greater than the veneer thickness. Apply masking tape before engraving so that when gluing in the veneer inlay, excess glue does not end up on surrounding base material. Apply wood glue, making sure all cracks are filled.
Step3: Insert Veneer
Insert the veneer. Press firmly, preferably using a roller. Clamp between stiff boards for at least 1 hour.
Step4: Remove aluminum tape
Remove the aluminum tape.
Step5: Remove masking tape
Remove the masking tape.
Step6: Sand and clear coat
Sand gently (220+ grit) and apply clear coat (varnish, lacquer, or whatever you like).
Step7: Glue together the remaining parts
Glue together the two parts of the base at the finger joint using wood glue. Clamp for 1 hour. Done!
