Information
I wanted to create a customized dice box for a friend's birthday gift. Holds a full set of dice for role playing games.

Instruction
1
Step1: Measure size needed for largest die
Preview

Measure the size needed to hold the dice you want to put in the box. We need to make sure each “hole” is at least this size.

The smallest left-to-right size of the hexagons should be this size plus some wiggle room. In my case, my dice were approximately .8 inches, so I made my hexagons just larger than that (approx 1 inch).

Divide the size by 1/8 inch/approx 3 mm to find the number of layers of “holes” you will need. In my case, for 1 inch, I will need 8 layers. I added 1 extra for space and another extra in case something broke (came in handy).

Step2: Create the "grid" of hexagons
Preview

Arrange the one hexagon in the middle and the 6 around it leaving enough space to create the border between “holes” for dice.

3
Step3: Create overall shape
Preview

Create the overall shape of the box large enough to cover the entirety of the hexagons comfortably in the center. Additionally, add a round hole the size of a dowel you have (I used a bamboo skewer).

Step4: Differentiate layers.

Copy the whole thing once. In the first copy, group every piece into one item and copy the number of times you determined in step one (In the annotated picture, these are A1 through A10).

In the second copy, delete the hexagons (B in the picture). Copy this again 2 more times.

One of these copies, delete the circle as well. This will be the lid and can be personalized (D in the picture).

In the other, expand the circle to be slightly larger. This will be the bottom hinge to make sure the dowel doesn't fall out (C in the picture).

5
Step5: Cut and Glue together

Once cut,  stack all layers minus the top and bottom layer to determine the length of dowel you need to use.

Glue all of the layers with hexagons together one on top of another, confirming everything lines up correctly. Glue the bottom piece with the larger circle on the bottom as well (A1-AX + C)

The top layer should be glued to the layer with the normal sized circle (B and D)

The dowel will be glued to the large circle on the bottom (C) to act as a “hinge”. Pull the dowel through the round hole in the the hexagon tiles (A1-AX) and glue to the lid at the top. Be careful with glue to make sure the lid and the hinge can move freely to allow the box to open and close as needed.
