Elevation Map of the Czech Republic – Showcase Project for xTool Laser Machines

This project demonstrates the capabilities of xTool laser machines when working with layered materials. The elevation map of the Czech Republic is based on the vegetation zones map by Zlatník (source on Wikipedia) and includes all eight elevation layers.

The entire project is designed as a layered puzzle that can be framed. The finished piece works well as an educational tool or a decorative element. Each layer is prepared in a way that shows the position of the next one, making assembly much easier.

To cut the parts cleanly and keep them in place during transport, we recommend using tabs. These prevent small pieces from falling out and allow you to move the full cut sheet to your work surface. You can enable this option in the software under the Tab Generation section:
	•	Number of tabs = 2
	•	Tab size = 0.5 mm
	•	Tab cut power = 20 %

Some of the pieces are tiny and may get burned during laser cutting – this is due to the nature of the material. The only way to reliably avoid this is to scale up the whole project, which of course increases material usage. The default version fits on three 300×300 mm boards for the map and two additional boards for the frame. For better results, however, we suggest increasing the overall size.

Start assembling the layers from the bottom (layer 1). Recommended glues:
	•	PVA glue (D2 type) – such as Herkules, Dispercol, or international brands like Titebond II, Elmer’s Glue-All, or UHU Coll. D2 glues are water-based, easy to work with, and provide enough open time for precise positioning.
	•	Alternatively, you can use CA glue (super glue) for faster bonding, especially on smaller parts – but it requires more precision and dries almost instantly.

Small parts can be aligned using the outline of the previous layer. The only exception is layer 2, which can be aligned using the outer edge of layer 1.

Recommended tools for assembly and finishing:
	•	cutting mat
	•	precision hobby knife or scalpel
	•	tweezers
	•	small weights or woodworking/hobby clamps for pressing glued layers together

Estimated assembly time depends on your experience and manual skills.

The label frame is an optional element. If you decide to scale up the project, we recommend generating a new frame using this tool: https://boxes.hackerspace-bamberg.de/ABox
